Epoxy over tile installation

Installation of Epoxy Flooring Over Tile

This project involved the installation of epoxy flooring over an old mosaic tile floor. The first task was to determine if the tile was well-bonded. Once confirmed, we mechanically abraded the surface to create the manufacturer’s desired profile for ideal adhesion.

What preparation is required for the installation of epoxy flooring?

We mechanically abrade the surface (for example, over existing tile) to create the manufacturer’s desired profile for ideal adhesion, remove any vinyl coving, install an integrated epoxy cove base where required, solvent‑wipe the floor to eliminate loose particles, then apply a high‑solids epoxy primer before the finished epoxy floor installation.

We proceeded to remove the existing vinyl cove so that we could apply our integrated epoxy coving, which will ultimately be seamless, creating a “bathtub” effect. This project happened in a school restroom, making our chemical-resistant topcoat ideal for minimizing staining. etc.

Can epoxy flooring be installed over tile?

Yes — provided the existing tile is well‑bonded, we can mechanically abrade it to the correct profile, remove any old coving, install integrated cove base if needed, and then proceed with epoxy primer and finish coats.

We used fast-curing resins to minimize downtime, allowing the area to be back in service in two days.

Preparation for Our Installation of Epoxy Flooring

Ceramic tile has a glazed finish, but the base is typically a clay base that has the same expansion coefficient as concrete, making it the ideal bonding surface. While we completed the profile, we confirmed and taped out all the areas for the new cove base installation. Due to thorough preparation, we will achieve the desired result, resulting in a long-term flooring solution that is easy to clean and chemically resistant, allowing this epoxy floor system to provide years of service.

Installation of epoxy cove base

Installing Epoxy Flooring With Cove

Any area that is exposed to wet conditions should always have a radius cove installed. Particularly, an integrated cove leaves no seams for dirt to accumulate. Furthermore, it minimizes “lazy” mopping with a dirty mop head, leaving behind soil stains in the corners and potentially bad odors over time.

Once the cove is complete, we remove the tape and confirm all edges are clean and neat. Then we solvent wipe the floor to eliminate any concerns for loose particles that could hinder the bonding of the upcoming decorative epoxy flooring system. We proceed with our high solids epoxy primer and allow that to take tack up a bit, creating the perfect adhesion for the finished epoxy floor installation.

What are the benefits of an integrated epoxy cove base?

An integrated cove base leaves no seams for dirt to accumulate, minimizes mopping mistakes and soil stains in corners, especially in wet‑condition areas, and helps maintain a cleaner and more hygienic floor system.

Epoxy flake flooring

Installation of Epoxy Flooring Using Flakes

In conclusion, our installation of epoxy flooring can come in many different colors and styles. This one happened to be an epoxy flake flooring system. This system, while aesthetically pleasing, retains the same durability and ease of cleaning as any other solid color system might retain.

This project was under tight time constraints, so we accommodated the customers’ needs by using fast-curing resins, which allowed for a quick return to service.

What types of decorative options are available for epoxy flooring?

We offer many different colors and styles, including flake‑broadcast systems that retain the same durability and ease of cleaning as our solid‑color systems, even when installed under tight time constraints using fast‑curing resins.

How long will the installation of epoxy flooring typically take?

The timeline depends on the surface condition and system selected. For example, when we used fast‑curing resins, the area was back in service in just two days after the installation of the epoxy floor system.

We hope to encourage you to take advantage of our free consultation service and let us help you select the right flooring system that will, at a minimum, meet your needs.
