Existing Condition: Our client had just purchased a brand new building and wanted to improve the aesthetics while protecting his forklift tires from the uneven surface and dustproof of the warehouse. Dust collection in a warehouse may seem harmless but it can pose a huge workplace safety hazard. Not only can dust be slippery, but it poses a hazard to equipment, such as forklifts, as it can enter and damage the internal electronics. At the minimum, dust is simply an eyesore that can make a warehouse look dirty and unkempt. We determined a warehouse floor coating system would be the most cost-effective solution for their problem.

Surface Preparation: The first step was to remove the existing coating which was delaminating all over the area,  identify all voids and cracks ½’ in-depth or greater which were filled with an epoxy slurry to create a smooth, even substrate. Once all problem areas were addressed we created a mechanical bond between the resinous material and the substrate, by diamond grinding the concrete to remove surface contaminants and get the manufacturer’s recommended concrete surface profile (CSP).

Products Installed: Once the preparation phase was completed, the next step was to apply the system base of epoxy coating. This material. of which is a high solid, multi-purpose epoxy resin was chosen because of its adhesive characteristics and it is not a 100% solids resin so its viscosity allows it to penetrate the pores of the concrete slab to promote chemical adhesion between the base coat and the substrate. After the material cured the floor we reinspect for rough areas and blemishes and if any were found they were corrected. Finally, a topcoat of aliphatic urethane a highly versatile hybrid polyurethane was applied. This product is designed to be used in areas that require maximum abrasion and wear resistance. Once it cures, the coating has a high gloss and chemical resistance to alkalies, dilute acids, spillage of solvents, chemicals, jet fuel, grease, etc.

Conclusion: The result is a warehouse floor painting system that is seamless, dust-proof, and attractive. This floor will have enough impact resistance to prevent damage from heavy vehicle traffic and dropped pallets.
