Benefits of Polyaspartic Flooring
Polyaspartic coatings are widely used in a variety of industries to protect concrete floor slabs from spills, chemicals, worker traffic, heavy vehicles, and debris accumulation. They are perfect for facilities such as: food processing plants, cold storage areas, industrial floors, warehouses, pharmaceutical processing plants, aircraft hangars, and automotive dealerships. Polyaspartic coatings are often used as a high performance topcoat over resinous floors or concrete with a 3500+ psi compressive strength.
Polyaspartics are designed to withstand abrasion, chemicals, moderate impacts, punctures, stains, and slightly higher temperatures compared to other coatings. Cleaning and maintaining polyaspartic coatings is simple as they do not need to be waxed or resurfaced like some other floor coatings. They also are UV resistant, so they do not yellow, which makes them ideal for outdoor settings.
One of the most significant benefits of polyaspartic coating systems is how quick and safe the installation is. Depending on the square footage of the installation, the coating can be applied and cured in as little as one day. The installation process is very low odor and can be done in a way that causes very little disturbance to facility operations. The low odor is due to a very unique property of polyaspartic coatings, that they have low to zero VOC (volatile organic compound) output. This is crucial for facilities that may not be able to afford a plant shutdown such as hospitals and food processing facilities. Although polyaspartics can be more expensive than other coatings, such as epoxies, it important to factor in the reduced application labor costs and downtime. Additionally, they can also be installed in near freezing and very high temperatures making them suitable for installation all year round.
Polyaspartic coatings can also be used in customized decorative finishes to suit specific facilities’ flooring needs. They can be tinted with special colorants, decorative colored chips, or colored quartz blends that are exceptionally aesthetically pleasing. The finish can also add slip and skid resistance to increase worker safety. These finishes are applied on-site and can be tailored to each individual area of the facility. Polyaspartics can even have antimicrobial properties added into the mixture to decrease the chance of bacterial growth.
There are some drawbacks to using polyaspartic flooring systems such as: the possibility of the material setting before application is complete causing trapped bubbles, blisters, and lap lines and difficulty with removal as the coating is incredibly tough. Polyaspartic coatings are not suitable where breathable concrete sealers are specified as they do not breath well. Despite these limitations, the cost-to-performance ratio of polyaspartics is impressive, and they warrant consideration for any facility. Their relative ease of installation and solid performance characteristics make them the ideal choice for many facilities.
