Epoxy Decorative Flakes

The epoxy decorative flake flooring system is achieved by embedding vinyl paint chips into an epoxy resin using a full broadcast system creating a tweed color effect, creating a sand epoxy flooring system. It also includes a chemical-resistant topcoat often used in lobbies, restrooms, and any area where you are looking to create a decorative look without breaking the budget.

Different project, but the same resinous flooring system

Existing Conditions: After the success of our epoxy decorative flake lab flooring installation for Berry plastics they called us back to perform the job in the rest of the labs and a few corridors. The Lab floor had an existing concrete slab in place that was in sound condition but our client wanted something that would be functional for their process but aesthetically pleasing as well.

Preparation of existing condition: The existing concrete floor was in sound condition foundationally but still required diamond grinding of the area to create a mechanical profile and remove surface contaminants.  From there the next step for our team cut keyways at a depth of ¼” to allow for material to maintain thickness and similar elevation of the surrounding floor and drain hubs.  Finally, we masked the areas to be coated and marked out the height of the cove base

Products Installed: The first step of this installation was to Install a 4" radial cove base to all wall to floor joints. Once that was complete we installed an epoxy resin glaze basecoat. This general-purpose high solids epoxy resin coating acted as the broadcast coat for 1/8" color flakes. After sweeping off the excess color flakes our installation team applied a grout coat of epoxy binder resin to act as a seal coat. Once that was cured we applied the aliphatic urethane topcoat so the floor would retain sheen, color and add an extra layer of scratch resistance.

Conclusion: This installation was rather routine but unique in the way the floor was used. Our team was tasked with creating a lab flooring system that would not only be eye-catching but would have to be fully chemical resistant and hold up against heavy use which is not generally the case in areas in which epoxy decorative flake flooring systems are specified. If a quick turnaround is required consider our MMA flooring system, which can be completed in one day.

Before

Here is the room we were given the task to clean up and make more inviting. We will start by masking the areas not to be affected and mechanically abrading.
